God's Provision is for Every South African

Provisionism teaches that Christ's atoning work is genuinely available to all people — not only to a predetermined elect. Discover what Scripture says, and how this truth speaks directly to the South African church.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." — John 3:16

The Seven Pillars

The PROVIDE Acronym

Provisionism is summarised in seven biblical truths, each one a divine provision that God has made available to every person.

P

The Problem

People Sin

All people have sinned, which separates everyone from fellowship with God. Therefore a divine provision became necessary.

Romans 3:23

R

Human Accountability

Responsible

Everyone is able to respond to God's appeals for reconciliation. Mankind is fallen but not rendered incapable of responding. God holds all people accountable — which implies they are able to respond.

Acts 17:30

O

Universal Invitation

Open Door

The divine provision is offered impartially to all. Anyone may enter through faith. The door is genuinely open — 'whosoever will may come.'

John 3:16; Rev. 22:17

V

Sufficient for All

Vicarious Atonement

Christ's atonement is of sufficient value for the sins of the whole world. It is not limited to a predetermined elect, but provides a way for anyone to be saved.

1 John 2:2; 1 Tim. 2:4–6

I

Grace for Everyone

Illuminating Grace

God's grace is offered sufficiently to all. The gospel provides clearly revealed truth so that all can know and respond in faith. No one is left without light.

John 1:9; Rom. 1:19–20

D

Justice for Unbelief

Destroyed

Those who reject God and resist the Holy Spirit face divine justice. Destruction is the consequence of their own unbelief — not a decree God made before they were born.

John 3:36; 2 Thess. 1:8–9

E

Safe in Christ

Eternal Security

All true believers are eternally secure. Salvation, once genuinely received by faith, cannot be lost. God's provision is everlasting for all who believe.

John 5:24; Rom. 8:38–39

A South African Perspective

Speaking to the South African Church

The Dutch Reformed Church (NGK) has shaped South African Christianity for over 370 years. Its Calvinist theology — rooted in the Canons of Dordt — teaches that God has predetermined who will be saved and who will not. For many South Africans, this is simply "what the Bible teaches."

But is it? Provisionism invites every South African to examine the Scriptures afresh — and to discover that God's love and provision are genuinely available to every person, not only to a chosen few.

Historical Context

Andrew Murray & the Evangelical Tradition

Andrew Murray (1828–1917), the DRC's most beloved minister, held an evangelical spirituality that stood in tension with strict Calvinism. He believed in the genuine universal offer of salvation, the importance of personal decision, and the urgency of evangelism.

Provisionism is not foreign to South African Christianity — it is a return to the evangelical heart that has always been present within it.

"The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."

Revelation 22:17
